A mixed buffet of half hits and half misses.

Okay, I'm sorry, I've got to get this off my chest. Listening to 'Dying To Live' by A Promise To Forget (another sort-of Metal band from the birthplace of Heavy Metal, aka Birmingham) is too much of a throwback to a time in music now tucked away tightly under a blanket of nostalgia. 'Dying ...' is like listening to Enter Shikari in 2007 – without the electro elements – with Lower Than Atlantis' Mike Duce and You Me At Six 'Take Off Your Colours' era Josh Franceschi. In other words, it's an album that's ten years too late.

Don't get me wrong, in 'Dying...', A Promise To Forget have crafted a heavyweight set of songs, but that's all it is, a set of songs rather than an album that has a cohesive and consistent nature. The band themselves tell you to decide for yourself what genre they are, and whilst it's easy enough to label them as I have above, it's also bloody difficult to really settle on whether they're Alternative Rock, Post-Hardcore, Melodic Metalcore, Math Rock or some other hybrid genre yet to be coined.

I've got it! How about "Throwback Rock"? In fact, they come off as the spiritual successors of the corpse of fellow Brummies Cytota – who are now known as Shvpes and fronted by a certain Iron Maiden singer's son. So much so, they almost sound identical at times, especially on the tracks that ditch the clean vocals for unexpected and warmly welcomed harsh ones on standouts like the title track and the Post-Hardcore blueprinted 'Courage', which slam down hard on your eardrums as you dream of circle-pitting in quick succession to them.

In fact, if you were to strip away the first five tracks of 'Dying...' and presented it as an EP consisting of the latter five, you'd have a body of work worth worshipping; a promising set of songs showing potential for British Metal from Birmingham, which let's face it, considering its history, is looking quite bleak lately.

If you like chugging bass lines, the heavier side of Enter Shikari, lyrics about growing up in grey Britain and dealing with those ever-familiar, well-trodden themes of love and loss, and are most definitely not living past 2007, then 'Dying To Live' will be your new favourite album.

Personally, it's a mixed buffet of half hits and half misses.
