A completely acoustic album of mid-paced Country Rock.

And now for something not completely different, but certainly a little less volatile and a calming respite from the melodic maelstrom that usually fills the 'Fireworks' pages. Jessica Lee Morgan comes from good stock in being the offspring of Mary Hopkin and Tony Visconti (surely no introductions necessary) with her own offspring coming in the form of her second album 'Around The Block'. Not that it describes, as you'd expect, her vast experience, but maybe more a case of her returning to her roots with a completely acoustic album of mid-paced Country Rock.

In a change from the eclectic nature of her debut, Morgan states she was aiming for "a more organic feel – a break away from the rigid formality of a studio album". There's also been a change by recording in different locations, sometimes literally on the road (if you ever passed an unusual sight involving saxophones on the A470 Brecon route, now you know).

She's joined by a rhythm section of Christian Thomas (her partner who also co-produces) and Simon Adams on an album represented by the easy shuffle of the choice of first single in 'Waiting To Leave'– a sensible selection as what sounds like a slight distortion on the guitar adds some variety to what could feasibly be an album full of potential singles. In truth, that's where the album struggles to loosen free of the limitations of the genre. The smooth and unruffled merging into one, and whilst 'What The Hell Was I Thinking?' touches more on the Morgan's more diverse style, at the same time it could tangibly be seen as a reaction to where 'Around The Block' has taken her.
The bonus track 'This Is My Love Song To You' is a less polished and stripped back live version complete with sing-along and rudimentary guitar and some, to be honest, fairly discordant backing vocals. It's more an unnecessary addition which might have been something fun for family and friends at Christmas, but when offered up for public consumption, doesn't really do any favours.

This is an album that might ultimately be one that has the effect of inducing a return to the harder stuff for your thrills.
