Midnight Rider have indeed opted to take Hard Rock and Metal back to its roots.

Ten tracks of classic German Heavy Metal/Hard Rock make up this debut album from a band that was formed in 2004 by guitarist Blumi; you could say that the "long awaited" tag could be justifiably used.

It's also an album that promises "Classic Heavy Rock in the vein of old Judas Priest or Black Sabbath" which will be music to the ears of similarly old (or "experienced" in the nicest possible sense) Rockers. Midnight Rider are a no frills, basic guitar/bass/drums set up with an emphasis on a raw and dirty guitar sound. In making a judgment on their billing, there is indeed an element of a restrained Rob Halford style vocal from Wayne, and for the sake of a label, possibly even a hybrid between the familiar upper registers of Halford and Ozzy Osbourne.

From 'When I Spew My Hate' to the splendidly titled 'Unknown Woman Of The Seine' (the title of a classic B-movie in the making), 'Manifestation' is a journey along a familiar Hard Rock route with a nod – or several – to some influences you might recognize and enjoy picking out.

Once the hate has been spewed, the first of several Black Sabbath-ian changes of pace comes in 'Tears Of Your Temptation'. More in the way of ambition comes with a slightly self-conscious evil laugh in the Cock Rocking swagger of 'Creature Of The Night' – ripe for plenty of straightforward rhyming couplets. It gives way to a mid-section change of pace before launching into a well-used pacey gallop. Derivative maybe, but fair do's to Midnight Rider for not being stuck in a rhythmic rut.

Whether or not 'I Wanna Be A Prowler' was written with tongue-in-cheek, it may raise a few hackles of political correctness, but then Metal has never followed convention. Some Pearl Jam/Jimmy Page-isms start to surface on the stop-start riffing of 'Arrival', suggesting some physical graffiti has been taking place. The album closes with the aforementioned '...Seine' setting a more laid back note – striking a chord with shades of 'Ramble On' from Led Zeppelin's 'II'

This is a musical soundtrack that perfectly fits the seemingly incongruous monochrome cover image of a cobbled dilapidated back alley – down to earth and coarse. Midnight Rider have indeed opted to take Hard Rock and Metal back to its roots.
