Worth keeping an eye on.

Even in these enlightened times where Rock and Metal have spread their influence across the globe, spending time with a Portuguese Metal act is something of a novelty. Thankfully, The Autist are anything but a novelty act, with a strong, bold mix of Symphonic bombast combined to a more Extreme Metal base as the band's Russian singer Polina Psycheya uses every trick in her book. Whether employing a clean, soaring attack or the out and out growls at her disposal, she's a force to be reckoned with and one ably backed by equally diverse musical forays. In places, Epica are strongly brought to mind, but TA are much heftier, much heavier and much more aggressive, the occasional blast heading into the Black Metal arena. Despite that potentially off-putting genre tag being deployed, in a way that most bands conjuring those themes know not how, this lot always ensure that melody and structure reign supreme over aggression and rage.

For proof, stand ready for battle alongside the scene setting atmosphere of 'Rebirth', the forceful smash of 'The Coldest Sun' and pulsatingly pounding 'Stardust'. However, the clean-growl-clean-growl vocal attack explored across these opening numbers can feel a little formulaic, the back and forth between full-on aggression and Symphonic grandeur a little too expected. That being said, it's preferable to some of the more full-on moments where the constant bass drum barrage feels cluttered and forced.

When you delve further into this album's core, the band's more extreme side is put in the spotlight, 'Ethereal' and 'The Sanctuary' finding the clean vocals used more here as embellishment to the big smashes of riff and growl, and becoming a little one dimensional in the process. However, with the closing 'Pandora's Curse' bonus track being the most enigmatically picturesque offering on show, there's no denying that this outfit aren't afraid to stretch their boundaries.

Even with Psycheya as convincing as she is, guest vocal slots are also provided; Chiara Tricarico of Temperance showing up on 'Age Of Leviathan', while Alina Lesnik from Once gives an astounding account of herself on 'The Coldest Sun' and '1349'. If anything, it's this willingness to incorporate different sounds and attacks that best sums this album up. In truth a stronger, more memorable set of songs would've made 'The Coldest Sun' a more enticing prospect and yet, with promise a plenty, The Autist are still worth keeping an eye on.
