I do wonder if an extra injection of passion or even anger in their sound would turn this good album into a truly great one.

Released in January 2017, 'About You' is the debut album from Vienna-based Third Love. The roots of the band started in 2010 when vocalist Nora Frõhlich and guitarist Martin Wohlmuth met. They were soon joined by Gerold Autengruber on bass and drummer Herbert Wirl completing the line-up found on this ten track outing.
First song 'Coming Home', with its jangly guitars and Frõhlich's high vocal register, initially conjures thoughts of Bjork, Kate Bush and The Housemartins – distinctly un-Rock! 'Easy' holds much more promise and brings in a nice hook, lightly distorted guitar phrasings and interesting lyrical content, whilst the haunting guitar parts found on 'Out Of The Blue' matched with clear punchy vocals make this slower number truly shine.

'Friends' has a funky rhythm which gets the feet tapping and as the whole sound here is meatier, the track pulls the band together more and gets great results. The following song, 'Berlin', is in a similar vein and works equally well. The band name comes from the fact that they love their partners, love their children, parents and friends – and thirdly they love music! When the four-piece band first formed, they played club gigs in Vienna before deciding they should make an album.

'Close To You' is perhaps the only song in existence to refer to nasal hair, but that being said the way this slow, Waltzy tune's lyrics are written actually gets across its gentle message in a lovely way. 'Listen' keeps things moving slowly and sees a return to an airier sound with the space given around each instrument in the mix adding to its simple sophistication. Finishing with 'Many Moons Ago', we stay in slow mode with clean guitar parts, light drum fills and a simple bass rhythm. Whilst the song is good it never seems to really get going.

Third Love's lyrical song-writing is fresh, interesting and works well throughout here, but whilst their middle of the road softer sound is perfectly listenable and they are clearly excellent musicians, I do wonder if an extra injection of passion or even anger in their sound would turn this good album into a truly great one.
