A good, solid, hard, Bluesy Rock album with three standout tracks that's well worth a listen.

Electric Lady is the first full-length release from French Rockers Abbygail, following on from their 2014 five track EP. I must admit, my only reference to French Heavy Rock was in my early teens with the band Trust, and even though they sang in their native tongue, I was a fan. Therefore, these guys have some big "chaussures" to fill, but there is the added advantage that they sing in English.

Opening track 'Dying Petal' starts with a big riff and we are clearly in Classic Hard Bluesy Rock territory. It has a big sound and clear production, Bertrand Roussel's vocals clear in the mix and they fit this genre perfectly. This is followed by 'Backdoor Man' with its driving rhythms, lyrically it's not so much about certain amorous proclivities, more about being the other guy when hubby goes to work. The title track has some excellent backing vocals by Amandine Duwooz which complement the song and make it one of the standout cuts. 'Abby' is one of those tunes that you've heard before with its throbbing beat, but this features some excellent fret-work from Luke Debruyne, and with David Coverdale-esque lyrics like "Abby you're so horny" and "let me reload", there's no need for an explanation.

'Snakebite' could easily have been lifted from any of the eighties Scorpions albums, while 'Pink Cadillac' (not the Springsteen song) is more about driving something other than an automobile - metaphors aplenty here. Another highlight is 'Gimme Another Shot' which has a Billy Gibbons Bar-room Boogie feel; it's bouncy, bright and makes you want to put on your dancing shoes and shake it like there's no one watching. 'Something Wrong In Your Head' is the album highlight, starting off all moody with a foreboding guitar refrain, it has a power ballad feel to it and a lovely exquisite guitar solo. Swirling guitar with a bass and drum intro leads us into the Doom riffage of 'Hole In My Soul', it's all very Black Sabbathy, while 'Rock 'N' Roll Man' is pretty much what you'd expect from its title. Album closer is an acoustic version of '...Head' with the added bonus of Duwooz on vocals; it feels like an altogether completely different song than its electric sibling; an absolute gem.

In conclusion, it's a good, solid, hard, Bluesy Rock album with three standout tracks that's well worth a listen... "tres bien fait Abbygail."
