Genre

An intensely cinematic record.

The Rocky Mountains immediately conjure up associations with nature, skiing and the water source for the legendary Coors Brewing Company. However, it might have to add Symphonic Metal to the list since it is home to Neverlight and their eyebrow-raising sophomore album 'Nova Red.' It is a thematic album which metaphors the struggle of casting one's own energy in order to fill the void of something lost elsewhere. It is certainly an ambitious concept in its own right (not to mention the challenge of setting it to music), and it presents an interesting idea to spark conversation nonetheless.

Concept aside and absorbing the music at face value, Neverlight succeeds with an impressive album that embodies the genre as established by the likes of Epica, Nightwish and The Murder Of My Sweet. Although the band features only two permanent members in John (guitars) and Amanda Farrell (vocals), they have recruited some great talent to assist them realize this intensely cinematic record. The opening track, 'In Darkness', reinforces that notion with a contribution from the Hertfordshire Chorus and illustrates the grandeur and massive scale they were trying to achieve. The Operatic quality of Amanda Farrell's voice delivers the melodies convincingly, her phrases giving the music levity by extending beyond the rhythmic confines established by the raging and mathematically precise rhythm section.

Neverlight employs high caliber musicians including drummer Dirk Verbeuren (Soilwork), bassist Ray Riendeau (Halford) and keyboardist Ruben Wijga (Revamp) who all deliver in spades. Although it is likely that no two musicians ever recorded in the same room, the quartet functions as a cohesive unit and sounds as if they had performed together before. Jacob Hansen also did a wonderful job mixing the album. He was able to control the dense instrumentation and place everything in the mix with astounding clarity.

Technology is wonderful in its ability to make the impossible possible by allowing musicians located all over the world to collaborate and record. Since 'Nova Red' was developed in that manner, Neverlight is possibly more of a "project" than a true "band" in the traditional sense. Therefore, those who take favor with the album should not harbor high expectations of seeing it performed live. However, if Neverlight were able to take this on the road, it would be interesting to see how they could convey the message behind the album in a visual capacity.
