I'm going to lay it on the line and say this is going to take some beating for my album of the year. Yes, it's that good!

Iron Maiden meets Metallica was my first impression on hearing this album; quite a bold statement I know, but I'm confident on listening yourself you'll come to a similar conclusion.

Epilog, the brainchild of guitarist and song-writer Michal Zeman, was formed in 2007 in the Czech Republic. There have been various line-up changes as well as the recording a couple of albums which Zeman states were more or less demos for friends; however, the experience of recording and studio time was invaluable. Zeman wanted to make an album that was great sounding, straight between the eyes and featuring powerful vocals. With Jirka 'G' Prochazka on bass and himself on drums, he got in touch with the Swedish vocalist Rob Lungren, who was in a couple of Metal bands but best known for his YouTube channel, and work started on the album.

The title of this release comes from a story by famed Horror novelist HP Lovecraft entitled 'The Whisperer In Darkness' and Zeman has used his admiration of Lovecraft's work throughout the album, some directly, but mostly inspired by; there's even a track entitled 'Nightmare HPL' whilst the cover artwork is a depiction of Cthulhu.

Lead off track 'Guardian Angel' comes flying out of the traps, it's heavy, melodic and catchy as hell with vocals to the fore yet never too far in front of the overall mix; it includes a guitar solo by additional guitarist Martin Skoda. The title track has a throbbing, foreboding riff, reminiscent of Ronnie James Dio era Black Sabbath, and another great solo from Skoda. If you write and title a song 'Apocalypse Now', you'd better make damn sure it's epic and this one doesn't disappoint; for me, it's the highlight of the album.

Starting off with a delicate picked guitar and impassioned vocal delivery, it then goes full-throttle and barely lets up, surely making it a potential live favourite. 'Terminal Train' sounds very Scorpions-esque and the lyric line "did you ever, have you ever, never ever" is a great hook. The album ends with another highlight in 'Other Side', it's almost a power ballad, featuring a piano and guitar intro, and an almost AOR feel, though the guitar work keeps it more on the Metal side.

I'm going to lay it on the line and say this is going to take some beating for my album of the year*. Yes, it's that good!
