Instead of hunting for the latest European exports or US retro act, get out there and support a great Metal band who are right on your doorstep.

Considering Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Saxon basically drew up the blueprint for what has gone on to become Power/Heavy Metal, we now have to look to mainland Europe for our Power-fix which is something of a travesty. Not one UK act since those heady NWOBHM days truly gained traction with little more than a cult following, unlike bands like Helloween, Primal Fear and many more who achieved true success. If one band from the isles which brought the sound to life deserves universal acclaim it's this one. Starting their good work through Fury UK, the band evolved into Absolva when bassist Luke Appleton was poached by Iced Earth. 'Defiance' is their fourth album since the name change, and, with Appleton once again shoulder to shoulder with his brother Chris on guitars, they've never been better.

A combination of mid and latter day Maiden, with a hammer-smash of what's allowed Saxon to catch their second wind, is where this band stake their claim and, with a hint of the current Euro-Power sound incorporated, 'Defiance' may well be their strongest opus to date. The searing guitars of 'Fistful Of Hate' provide the smack to the senses you'd expect, just as 'Life On The Edge' tips you into oblivion through sharp tempo changing twists and turns. Any band stamping their foot on the monitor needs a striking, unforgettable vocal presence, and in Chris Appleton there's no doubt Absolva have just that. Eschewing the temptation to copy the greats, he instead uses a surprisingly melodic cut-and-thrust, before adding a rasping edge to a sharp snarl to win the day.

With 'Defiance' holding none of the longer epics from the band's previous efforts, it's left to the swirling acoustics of 'Connections' and more restrained 'Reflection' to balance off expertly against the jabs of 'Who Dares Wins' or 'Life And Death'. It's a clever mix which reveals a real maturity within the band. As if all that wasn't enough, there's also an eight track bonus disc featuring four excellent live numbers, three acoustic cuts and the standalone single 'Harsh Reality'.

No matter how wide you cast your net, 'Defiance' will be a match for any other Metal album released this year. Instead of hunting for the latest European exports or US retro act, get out there and support a great Metal band who are right on your doorstep. Absolva is their name and 'Defiance' is their game.
