Already one of my all-time Metal favourites.

Imagine the singer of All About Eve if she sang for Vinnie Vincent's Invasion crossed with Diamond Head or Metallica and you may get an idea of the experience of listening to Shokker. From Chicago, they have been together since 2011 with this being their first full-length album (despite the title 'III'). It channels old-school Metal in an energetic, headlong way similar to the Canadian band Skull Fist, except for the fact they have a female singer in Rachl "Raxx" Quinn who has a kick ass and powerful voice that easily stands up to the challenge of this type of material.

Starting with titanic riffs, owing something to Bay Area Thrash which in turn owes a lot to Brian Tatler, title track 'III' is automatically lifted by the high range and intensity of Quinn's vocals. It's like the Falsetto of Mark Slaughter, but that high range is, of course, more natural to a female. We have seen more women in Alternative and Gothic Rock bands attempt this slightly Operatic style, but there's definitely space for a female wanting to do this in the more traditional Metal world, especially someone who can take on the boys so easily. The following 'Hammerhead' demonstrates that she has the power of Geoff Tate (on 'Queen Of The Reich') as well as the high range. There's also plenty of quality shredding to aid that old-school feel.

What is new is the lyrical subject matter as Shokker tackle the complicated subject of relationships in 2017 through the eyes of a female ('Snake Eyes' and 'Turn Around And Run') and the position of Millennials as they try to find a place in a western world that appears in a state of complacent decay ('Life & Despair'). 'Adrenaline' tackles the subject of the tension that a high-octane stage life has on relationships, and the boys in the band back up Quinn's killer vocals with all the energy of a freight train tearing through a tunnel so beloved of Heavy Metal addicts everywhere. Space prohibits a dissection of every song, but it's all excellent old-school stuff that I'm delighted to see a young band produce.

If you acquire this album I guarantee you won't regret it. This is an album that is already one of my all-time Metal favourites, right up there with the first two Vincent albums, 'Number Of The Beast' and 'Borrowed Time' – yes, it's really that good.
