It's a Masterpiece and Album Of The Year.

Brazil is currently a hotbed for Progressive Metal bands and Daydream X1 must be one of the best ones judging by this album! 'The Circus Of The Tattered And Torn' is the band's sophomore release and follows 2014's 'The Grand Design'. I'm ashamed to say that I'd never heard of Daydream X1 until the album landed through my letter-box, but I shouldn't be surprised at the quality contained within considering that Mike Portnoy invited them to play at the inaugural Progressive Nation At Sea and that they have toured with the likes of Symphony X, Angra and Paul Di'Anno.

This release contains eleven tracks, clocking in at an impressive seventy-one minutes, and is a concept piece where a circus master takes his apprentice through the various acts. It begins with a spoken intro which segues into 'Open The Curtains' and then... wow! Guitars, drums and then more guitars jump out of the speakers with Dream Theater and Evergrey being immediate comparisons. Some soothing keyboards enter the fray and there's a short choral section before it quickly jumps into 'Trust-Forged Knife' with lots more guitar and some melancholic and emotional vocals from main-man Tiago Masseti (he wrote all the lyrics and music and produced the album) who sings in a similar way to Claudio Sanchez (Coheed And Cambria). The guitar work is superb and comes courtesy of, you've guessed it, Masseti and his sidekick Marcelo Pereira – it's heavy yet melodic.

'Painted Smile' offers more of the same and there are some wonderful harmonies from Masseti. 'Windblown' is a slower number where Masseti shows off his amazing vocal range over a lilting piano and then... smash! 'A Cup Of Agony' reminds the listener of what this three-piece can do, especially Bruno Giordano as he pummels your ears with some mind-blowing drumming. I'd love to go into more detail for the remaining tracks, but space limitations preclude me from doing so. However, I can confirm that the quality does not let up, far from it, especially during 'Forgettable' which the song certainly isn't!

This fantastic album draws to a close (I didn't want it to end) with the title track; it's a fifteen-minute epic which includes acoustic guitars, layers of synths, Metallic guitars with gargantuan riffs, pounding drums and, of course, Masseti's hypnotic vocals! I really can't eulogise enough about the quality contained within! It's a Masterpiece and Album Of The Year*! Get my drift!
