Niche music for a niche audience perhaps, but it's nice... very nice.

'Quirky Musings' is the second release from Welsh instrumental band Kinky Wizzards (their press release says they're "renowned", though I'd never heard of them, and nor had my mum, so perhaps they should be "re-nouned".) In recent times, The Fierce And The Dead have done much to relight my fire for quirky instrumental music, so I approached '...Musings' in a "take that and party" spirit. After all, the song titles gave every reason to expect an album of musical fun and experimentation.

Appropriately primed, 'Quirky Musings' doesn't disappoint. As an "audacious Rock Jazz band", Kinky Wizzards are both audacious and Rocky, and as all earth dogs and rivet heads know, "Rock Jazz" is much better than "Jazz Rock".

Consisting of Mathew "Miffy" Griffiths on bass, Jonathan "Jiffy" Griffiths on drums and Ryan "no nickname" Elliott (Eden Shadow) on guitar, here the Kinky ones show their chops over nine entertainingly varied and unpredictable tracks of Rock Jazz coolness.

Opener 'Caffeine Overdose' is frantic with a funky section you can dance to... and I did. 'The Snake' is all meandering guitar-driven snake-iness and, like 'Done With This Place', features surprisingly (and pleasingly) heavy riffage and killer guitar work. 'Door Dancing Penny Collector' has a swinging groove that gets heavy in a seventies kind of way – dig that sax solo, man! 'Kinky Joe From Mexico's Burritos' screams Frank Zappa though it's mellower than expected, while 'Chocolate Teapot' melts your brain as it drops occasional Rush-like sounds and chord progressions into the mix. The most "Rock 'n' Roll" track here is 'Stompfoot Syndrome' which has echoes of Led Zeppelin-esque creativity and Uriah Heep's 'Gypsy'. 'Free Spirit' closes in relatively studious but unshackled style with chill out, drift away qualities that go very well with a late-night cup of tea. My favourite track, though, is 'A Poltergeist In Glenmore' with its stunning bass work off which the band hang all sorts of weird shit and spooky mayhem.

The musical hotchpotch should not disguise the fact that there is some great song-writing and playing here. I'm not sure I quite have the vocabulary or technical knowledge to do it justice but it's fine stuff and tremendously enjoyable – believe the hype (if you hear any). Niche music for a niche audience perhaps, but it's nice... very nice.
