An impassioned, nay joyous celebration of the art in about as pure a form as you'll find anywhere these days.

Before there was Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, hell before there was even Rock 'n' Roll, the soundtrack to the life of the downtrodden masses came courtesy of the Blues. There's a debt of gratitude owed to pioneers like Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson (to name but four) by virtually every genre of popular music since the birth of Rock 'n' Roll back in the fifties (and probably a few that predated it too) – a debt so incalculably massive that it will never be repaid.

These days "da Blues" seems to be as marginalised as any of its contemporaries, and whilst most Rock/Metal fans pay it scant attention, from time to time as the mood takes, I like to trawl back through the archives to see what I might have missed.

A Grammy-nominated, multi-award-winning guitarist/vocalist, perhaps best known as the master of slide guitar, Clyde Vernon "Sonny" Landreth was born in the American Deep South around the time the Blues was morphing into Rock 'n' Roll. He released his debut album 'Blues Attack' in the same year Journey released 'Escape' and has since gone on to record numerous others, playing and working along the way with legends such as Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Eric Johnson and Derek Trucks.

Recorded in his adopted hometown of Lafayette (Louisiana), this double live set offers a real up-close-and-personal glimpse into the man and his music. The first disc is an intimate acoustic set featuring old favourites such as 'Blues Attack', 'Bound By The Blues' and his signature 'Creole Angel'... close your eyes and you can just breathe the smoky, sweat-soaked atmosphere of some back street, after-hours club.

Disc two flicks the switch and is more my kind of Southern-fried Blues to be honest. Launching with a laid back 'Back To Bayou Teche', the highlights come thick and fast in the shape of the sprawling instrumental 'Brave New Girl', 'Soul Salvation' and 'Walkin' Blues' hitting a particular high.

Delivered from the gut and with more depth and character than most modern day "Rock" acts could muster in half a dozen careers, this is an impassioned, nay joyous celebration of the art in about as pure a form as you'll find anywhere these days. Go on, take a walk on the wild side, you may be pleasantly surprised.
