This is a Pop album, judge it as such and it's a reasonably decent one, but as a Rock album, it's sadly lacking.

2014's 'Savages' was something of a return to Theory Of A Deadman's former sound after the somewhat experimental 'The Truth Is...'. Featuring the signature melodies interspersed with Grunge-tinged Rockers like 'Drown' and 'The Sun Has Set On Me', it perhaps signalled a return to the former glory of 'Scars & Souvenirs' which, in terms of success, remains their finest album.

You have to admire artists who refuse to repeatedly make the same album, and yet there's a fine balancing act; too much of a change can certainly prove detrimental. There's also the possibility that the record label themselves put pressure on bands to write in a certain way. We've seen in recent times that artists who came to prominence in the mid-noughties with a brand of Modern Melodic Rock have changed to a more Pop-orientated sound that hasn't always worked. It would seem every label wants their own Train, Maroon 5 or Goo Goo Dolls. "Theory" (a rebranding of the original name) have kicked long-time producer Howard Benson into the long grass and instead opted for Martin Terefe, a producer more famous for producing Pop albums by A-Ha, Train and Westlife than Hard Rock. That should start alarm bells ringing! The talented guitarist Dave Brenner must wonder what he'll do when the band play live as this album seems devoid of guitar.

Opener 'Straight Jacket' – a song not dissimilar to Aloe Blacc's 'I Need A Dollar' – seems quirky, but halfway through the album, there's a realisation that it's all cut from the same cloth. First single 'RX' – a sort of homage to Spaghetti Westerns with its whistled intro – takes a look at the zombie effect of a drug-addled world, 'Echoes' and 'PCH' have more in common with Neon Trees or The Killers – not a bad thing but perhaps best left to those bands who do it much better – while 'G.O.A.T' is more like something that you'd find from Imagine Dragons. There's no doubt that '...Call' does have its highlights, 'Time Machine' is incessantly catchy and a possible hit, likewise 'Po Mouth'– a kind of Kid Rock meets Train mash-up – and the cover of Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game'.

Make no mistake, 'Wake Up Call' is a Pop album, judge it as such and it's a reasonably decent one, but as a Rock album, it's sadly lacking. The band clearly hope to appeal to a newer audience... well, that's the band's theory.
