If you're a Blues fan, this will slot very nicely in your collection.

This is Jeff Fetterman's follow-up to his rather fine 'Bottleful Of Blues' album and he shows he means business right from the off with the funky, bluesy 'Somebody Get Me A Doctor'. If you put a voice in a barrel, added some whiskey, a rasp, a few rocks from the creek and let it mature for a few weeks, you'd get Fetterman's. In most bands being a great vocalist is enough, but this is a Blues band, so you have to sing and play guitar – it's Blues law, scraped in the dirt at a crossroads somewhere... probably using one of the devil's horns. Fetterman possibly made such a deal with the devil because he certainly has the chops. 'Something Ain't Right' has the feel of Southern Rock from way back in the day with sharp guitar riffs and a punchy solo – straight to the point and no nonsense.

'Devil Knockin' At My Door' starts with a deserted town, tumbleweed blowing through atmosphere before it starts kicking arse halfway through; we're still in Southern Blues territory but moving a bit more towards the mid-seventies era. 'Brand New Day' is more Stevie Ray Vaughn-like – it's schmoozy, smooth and sleazy. We take a trip to good old Rock 'n' Roll with 'Lover Man' which will get a crowd hopping even without a few beers.

I love the marching band beats on the opening of 'Goodbye John Brown', it's also got a skippy riff that ZZ Top would be proud of. 'Broken Hearted' is probably the album's most traditional offering, just as you think it's an instrumental, the vocal arrives with a real B.B. King feel. Jeff Fetterman and his band are really tight and 'Early Grave' is a good showcase for this, while 'Bad Feeling' is a good fifties style rocker with a Molly Hatchett style melody (and growl) on the vocal. The album closes out traditionally with 'These Arms Of Mine'.

I loved 'Bottleful...', it was a good solid record by a great band, but '9 Miles From Nowhere' has managed to up the ante. If you're a Blues fan, this will slot very nicely in your collection. Just because he's probably not that well known outside his native Philadelphia, it doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to sit alongside Vaughn or Kenny Wayne Shepherd, it's just in true Blues style, some get the breaks, some don't... or maybe he never signed that crossroads pact after all...
