One of the best albums of its kind in a long time.

Back in 1978, Canadian band Zon released their debut album 'Astral Projector' and it was everything fans of Styx, Kansas and Saga could want. One of the very best Pomp Rock releases of all time, it was full of fantastic and clever songs with great vocals, a solid rhythm section, great guitar and brilliant keyboards. That album is a classic of its kind and remains a favourite all these years later. Great, but what does this have to do with Aldenfield? Zon's keyboard genius, Howard Helm (Refugee, Hunter-Ronson, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Cryptic Vision, to name a few) has formed this new Melodic Progressive band who have just released their debut album 'Light Of Day' which is available through his website.

Aldenfield features Helm (keys/vocals), Jim Morris (guitar/vocals), Ruben Drake (bass) and Mark Prater (drums), and between them they have created a stunning piece of work that should appeal to anyone who longs for seventies style Prog/Pomp with kick ass playing – think Kansas circa 'Leftoverture'. Now, it's by no means a copy of that album, it's just technically comparable in terms of the complexity of the songs and the musical ability of the players. Apart from the short intro, the tracks range between six and eleven minutes in length, which gives plenty of opportunity for the band to stretch out and show their chops, and boy-oh-boy have they got plenty of chops. The interplay between keys and guitar is stunning with wonderful flurries throughout.

It's hard to pick out favourite songs. This is because this is one of those albums that is so good you find yourself sucked into the melodic pleasure and you don't want it to end, but if I had to pick out a few, then I would choose the epic 'Here And Now', which is eleven minutes of Pomp/Prog bliss, and also 'Going Nowhere', which has a Kansas vibe mixed with Coliseum II and Presto Ballet.

Aldenfield have produced one of the best albums of its kind in a long time, and deserve to get snapped up by a decent label who can get this album out to a wider audience; therefore, I hope the likes of InsideOut and similar such labels are reading this.
