These Austrian musicians have certainly produced another epic Symphonic album to continue their rise up the Metal ladder.

After their fifth album 'Codex Atlanticus' (2016) – based on Leonardo da Vinci's teachings and manuscripts – became Serenity's most successful album to date, one that built on their growing popularity and burgeoning reputation, they've delved into yet another historical archive and developed an album based on the legacy and happenings of King Richard I (Richard The Lionheart).

The band – consisting of the fabulous voice of Georg Neuhauser, the dextrous musicality of guitarist Christian Hermsdörfer, the thunderous drums of Andreas Schipflinger and the deep resonance of Fabio D'Amore on bass – have also utilised a number of guest musicians once more, including Serious Black/Firewind guitarist Bob Katsionis contributing the guitar solo on 'My Fantasy' and Serious Black keyboard player Jan Vacik once again producing as well as contributing backing vocals and involved in the song writing. As on previous releases, this album also features female vocals, but on this occasion in the form of ex-Faun member Katja Moslehner on the ballad 'Heaven' and Sleeping Romance front-woman Federica Lanna on end cut 'The Final Crusade'.

Just as 'Codex...' was as historically accurate as it could be, the same courtesy has been afforded to 'Lionheart'. King Richard's story is steeped in rich history and his ultimately failed crusade (Christianity's third) to reclaim Jerusalem for all of Christendom, despite many heroic wins in battle against the Muslim armies, is well documented. The title track extolls Richard's fight against Saladin (Salah ad-Din) in the holy lands with fast rhythms and orchestration the main centrepiece of the song. Hermsdörfer's quick and melodic soloing being a feature of this and many other songs on the album.

Composer Lukas Knoebl has orchestrated the opening epic instrumental 'Deus Lo Vult' (Old French for 'God Wills') that is set to be the opening fanfare for the band's live performances – he has also created the sound-programming on all of the songs – while the instrumental 'King's Landing' that provides a bridge in the middle of the album is a sombre piano interlude.

All the Symphonic stylings and Progressive rhythms are in abundance on this release with heavy riffing, superb soloing and melodic choruses strewn across the entire album. There are also Celtic flavours on the likes of 'United' and 'Lionheart' itself, while Arabesque tones and marching rhythms give 'The Fortress (Of Blood And Sand)' a distinctly different flavour. These Austrian musicians have certainly produced another epic Symphonic album to continue their rise up the Metal ladder.
