It is simply such a shame it is a collection of re-recorded tracks because if this was new material, it would be a modern classic.

If 2016 was the year of nostalgic trips down memory lane disguised as album-anniversary concerts, then 2017 is quite possibly going to go down in the history books as the year bands re-wrote their history by re-working, re-recording, and re-releasing their past works in glossy new formats. At the crux of it all is the very same Achilles heel that has haunted the recent plague of album anniversary tours; often or not, it's an unnecessary cringe-worthy attempt at playing on past glories in a vain hope of mainstream resurgence. Quite a few of the artists I adore have somewhat butchered their past masterworks for no real reason, and it's been an unfortunate casualty of the ever-changing sell-or-die mentality of the music industry.

Therefore, when Iron Savior's 'Reforged – Riding On Fire' landed on my desk, it was with great caution and anxiety that I pressed play on its nineteen tracks – all re-recorded re-workings of their fan favourites and best sellers from their first five albums, a surmising of their early works that are no longer available. With half a back catalogue locked away in legal battles, it's understandable why a band as prestigious in Power Metal circles as Iron Savior would look to re-record and re-work their catalogue to present their newer fans with their history, and it's even more rewarding to find that it is the opposite of the Achilles heel plaguing most of the recent re-works.

1997's 'Riding On Fire' rightfully takes its place as the opening klaxon, the siren song of the collection, and by God, is it a beautiful sight to behold. Album production as an industry standard has improved tenfold in the twenty years since Iron Savior released their self-titled debut and this re-record transfers their age-old epic into a modern-day masterpiece, a Power-Metal-by-numbers if there ever was one. From '...Fire' to 'Atlantis Falling', the playing is clinically more precise than it has ever been, the solos sounding far more developed and desirable than they ever have before. Iron Savior haven't simply re-presented their back catalogue as much as they've revitalised it like Jesus rising from his tomb.

It's difficult to fault something so flawless, and maybe the only criticism 'Reforged – Riding On Fire' could possibly receive is that it is simply such a shame it is a collection of re-recorded tracks because if this was new material, it would be a modern classic.
