Hi all,
Did anyone of you see the documentary film about the Canadian metal band Anvil? Critics call it one of the best rock documentaries of all time. What do you think? Is it really a 'must see'?
Here's a review from rottentomatoes.com and this is the official trailer.

I plan to get the DVD, Berny - but have not managed to pick it up so far. You are certainly correct about the critical acclaim it received when it first came out.

The Movie was ok, and proved the group never gave up hope of hitting the big time and achieving some success, the film was well directed with a good story line, but that is where it ended for me as the music itself is one of the main reasons they failed in the first place.

Thanks for the reminder.
I bought this in Tesco for £5 a few months back and just completely forgot all about it.
Going to watch it over the weekend and I'll let you know my thoughts.

Got it today - but not in Tesco.
I found it in Fopp - still five quid, though!

I ordered my copy on eBay yesterday, £8.99 for the limited edition box. Funny, I started this thread because the film was released in German and Austrian cinemas last week - seems to have taken them two years to find a distributor for the subtitled version. I didn't even know that the film was out on DVD yet ...

It's been out for ages here Berny.
PJS, you're lucky to still have a Fopp, we lost ours when the company just about disintegrated a while back.

A great shame!
My first encounter with a Fopp was in the west end of Glasgow, on Byres Road. Indeed, there were several good stores in which to rummage for additions to my CD collection on Byres Road in those days...
Anyway, I digress... (Sometimes I think I should have been Welsh!!)
I believe that this may have been the first Fopp, from which they then spread to other Scottish locations and then into England...probably too rapid an expansion.
As you have so rightly said, darkblue, the company more or less disintegrated and the one in Manchester is now, I think, owned by HMV. There are two HMV stores in Manchester anyway (one of which - in the Arndale Centre starting life as a Virgin before becoming a Zaavi (thought: is that what virgins become when are no longer??? - but I digress again!!)so they have retained Fopp as something pretty close to what Fopp always used to be.
But, beware, Fopp is not always cheaper than the main HMV stores!! [Gasp!!]

Yes I think your thoughts on Fopp and its origins are correct (was this covered in your excellent recommendation "Last Shop Standing"?)(and indeed Glasgow did used to have loads of record stores worthy of a visit, not so much now I'm afraid).
I do really miss Fopp, as it was, I have never been in it since they left Dundee. Virgin binned all their non Mega Stores and they all became the awful stores called Zavvi. The one in Aberdeen (around the corner from the excellent One Up Music) is barely worth being open as it has such a small selection.
