Jimmy Barnes - 'Hindsight'
HotUtterly essential collection of hits re-recorded with special guests.
Despite his Scottish birth, Jimmy Barnes is a beloved Australian Rock Legend, racking up an incredible amount of success throughout his storied career. He was the indestructible voice of the mighty Cold Chisel before becoming a solo artist, when his first solo release 'Bodyswerve' hit number one on the album charts and the subsequent five efforts after that all did the same. To celebrate thirty years away from CC, Barnes has put together 'Hindsight', which revisits tracks from his solo career with a selection of well chosen guests.
Produced by the seemingly ubiquitous Kevin Shirley, the sound is loud and in your face and the very first notes of 'Lay Down Your Guns', cut with The Living End, set the bar sky high. The song is fresh, powerful and huge, with Barnes sounding the best he has for years. 'Time Will Tell' with the Baby Animals is equally as compelling and the horns section on 'Ride The Night Away' featuring Little Steven work brilliantly.
Every song has been given a fresh gloss – 'I'd Die To Be With You Tonight' is performed in tandem with Barnes' old pal Diesel, and Barnes brings in family to boot. A show stopping version of 'Stand Up' sees Barnes trade howls with his equally leather lunged daughter Mahalia who delivers a wailing performance Tina Turner would be proud of. He also duets 'Walk On' with his son David Campbell, who sings superbly on the track. 'Going Down Alone' features Journey's Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain while guitar hero Joe Bonamassa puts his indelible stamp on the Barnes and Tina Arena rendition of 'Stone Cold'.
Shihad team up for a truly thunderous take on one of Barnes' fiercest tracks 'Love And Hate' and the duet of 'I'd Rather Be Blind' with former INXS/Noiseworks and current Dead Daisies vocalist Jon Stevens is majestic.
Often re-recording your hits can result in inferior versions, but here Barnes has got things absolutely spot on. Curiously, the superb version of 'Good Times' with Keith Urban is missing from the European release, but the songs that are included all match or eclipse the originals, the guests fit seamlessly with the material and Jimmy Barnes himself sounds completely invigorated by the whole process. There's no wonder this went straight in at number one in Australia. That's not nostalgia talking, that's people appreciating great versions of great songs. I promised myself I wasn't going to use the obvious pun, but this is an absolute barnstormer of a record. Utterly essential!
