Meridian - 'Margin Of Error'

Meridian have certainly done themselves proud here.

A few years ago I was rather impressed by Danish band Meridian's second album 'Breaking The Surface, if only because it allowed me to stick a "great, Danes" pun in the review. Daftness aside, it was one of those albums that is made to be enjoyed by anyone who basically appreciates Rock music, so I'm glad to see they are still hard at it and also taking some time over their next album.

'Margin Of Error' follows on from last year's 'Fate Of Atlantis' EP and indeed it contains the four tracks from that previous offering, which I'm fairly sure will piss off anyone who has both. Regardless of this, it's clear from the start that this is yet another quality release as 'The Devil Inside Us All' mashes crunchy guitars with fine melodies to great effect. Vocalist Lars Marker has a great voice that carries the track nicely and he uses his range well throughout, plus he's complemented by some excellent guitar work from Martin Anderson and Marco Angioni.

However, it's not a full-on track so it's then great when 'Off To War' adds an Iron Maiden-esque gallop that gets the blood flowing. 'Second Best' follows by slipping itself slap bang in the middle (pace and energy-wise) and these three tracks set the listener up for the rest of the album perfectly. Meridian are simply a Rock band who can Metal it up when they have to, but they are not afraid to get lighter. Every song is played with skill and stuffed with melody as well as catchy bits.

Meridian have certainly done themselves proud here, matching the quality of 'Breaking The Surface' and even adding to it a little which is no mean feat. Smooth guitar, quality vocals and a backline that gives serious welly when needed all mean that 'Margin Of Error' is pretty much error free. Once again, this is far from mundane – it's great, Danes (groan).
