Kip Winger

Kip Winger - The Borderline, London (UK) - 12th September 2015

Could anyone ever claim they have been to a mediocre solo gig by Kip Winger? The answer must be a categorical no, for the very reason that this American singer/song-writer and multi-instrumentalist never fails to deliver. He has made this intimate and sold-out show at the famous Borderline an annual recurrence and can almost call it home turf as a number of familiar faces are present and acknowledged by the grateful man.

However compelling and crafted his solo material is, the first and foremost reason the crowd gathered there was to hear the songs of the band he has fronted for almost three decades and takes his name, the mighty Winger. Baptising the set with the glorious 'Easy Come, Easy Go' off the 1990 'In The Heart Of The Young' album, Winger ensured the audience was on his side singing alone to that and more of the same equally enchanting songs from the first three Winger albums; 'Who's The One', 'Headed For A Heartbreak', 'Hungry', 'Under One Condition', 'Spell I'm Under', 'Down Incognito' and 'Madelaine', amongst others. A true treat for the fans. To spice things he invited a percussionist friend on stage, who remained there for 'Rainbow In The Rose' and 'Can't Get Enough', the latter purposely played in a different tempo, giving it an almost Country vibe.

Winger's full-on twelve-string guitar kept beautiful company to his still majestic voice, despite some mishaps on a couple of occasions. Nonetheless, few vocalists can actually avoid the passing of time and one must admit Winger is still up there with the greatest. Copying from what he did on the same show last year, he phoned his band mate Reb Beach so that he could say hello to the audience and rub in the fact that he is playing in December at Wembley with his other band Whitesnake.

To the delight of the audience, Kip Winger later on called Fiona so that we could all congratulate her on her birthday, and whilst he tuned his guitar, he shared some interesting stories with us in an effort to keep people interest. And from what I could gather nobody failed to be impressed, yours truly included.

Perhaps being overly critical, I'd award a slightly lower score than last year but still an absolutely brilliant show and a magnificent way to start a Saturday night.
