Airrace - 'Shaft of Light'

A Rocktopia user review by Speedy Hicks.

With such an influx of reissues currently flooding the market its nice to see that the rather splendid Airrace have made
an appearance with the delightful “Shaft of Light”. Originally released way back in 1984 and has long since been a bit
of a collectors item, thankfully this has all changed with this remastered and expanded edition, also boasting a 4000
word essay on the groups history and their sad demise. Fast forward many years and the band are currently hitting the
stages again and gearing up for another album .Back to matters in hand this band I believe could have been the UKs
answer to Journey one listen to the riff heavy “Promise to Call” and you can see why the press back in the day was
saying it as well. “Keith Murrell” is a vocalist of the highest standard with “First One over the Line” being a fine
example of his talent. I have one huge massive gripe with this album and that is original producer “Beau Hill” decided
for whatever reason to make “Jason (son of) Bonham play an electronic drum kit!! which was the in thing of the day,
what a travesty as those drums were designed for the likes of “Spandau Ballet” not a legend like Jason Bonham. This album
comes with the 2 bonus tracks that are in fact demos which gives a tiny insight into what maybe was to follow. I defy anyone
not to get drawn into such songs as “Brief Encounter” and “Open Your Eyes” a masterclass from 1984.
